UNITAR of the UN is recruiting for a Training Assistant


UNITAR is an autonomous body within the United Nations with a mandate to enhance the effectiveness of the UN through training and research.

Job Title: Training Assistant

Programme: Niger Delta Development Office, Local Development Programme

Location: Port-Harcourt

Duration of contract: 12 months

Job Description:
Training and Capacity Strengthening for Sustainable development in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria.

Area of Specialization/Thematic Areas:
  • Development of Data base for training sector
  • Planning and delivery of training programmes


Responsibilities:
  • Collect and analyze viable NGO's in the partnering states in our programme areas
  • Workshop organization – Planning and Delivery
  • Gather pertinent background material and maintain files (both paper and electronic) and database for work unit
  • Research, compile, summarize and organize information and reference materials from various sources (reports, work plans, studies, briefings, meetings/conferences, etc.) and make an up dated inventory of relevant documentation
  • Proofread documents and edit texts for accuracy, grammar, punctuation and style, and for adherence to established standards formats
  • Assemble documents, reports and other materials for global dissemination using standard processing package to produce a wide variety of large, complex documents (reports, tables, charts, graphs, presentations etc.)
  • Develop up-to-date database for all training and capacity building sectors in our programme
  • Assist with data use capacity development and programme activities
  • Assist with development and field testing of programme reporting tools and improving data use
  • Assist with monitoring, evaluation and reporting of programme activities, prepare success stories and periodic progress report as required
  • Highlight previous recipients and establish impact monitoring systems in various sectors of the programmes
  • Participate in programme working groups with partners and develop strategies to integrate data use approaches and tools into projects and partners activities
  • Create Frameworks that align with Governments' development strategies and respond to training needs
  • Develop a Comprehensive list of programmes beneficiaries that will highlight PHPO programme activity in the Niger Delta Region
  • Assist with literature reviews, data analyses, preparation of case studies and presentations as requested
  • Raise proposals to partners for implementation of training programmes in the institutes' thematic areas
  • Assist in examination and selection of potential beneficiaries to UNITAR facilitated Technical Training Programme in the Niger Delta, Norway and Namibia
  • Technical assistance on planning and implementation of projects with partners; Implementation of Egi business development network Project to promote self employment and help incubate businesses in partnering states in the Region
  • Assist in the implementation of UNOSAT programme in the Region. Preparing agreements with partners, interfacing with implementing UN Agencies
  • Liaise with UNITAR Administration and Finance Section on expenditures of assigned projects and activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of UNITAR Nigeria

  • Seamless operations of office
  • Projects workshops completed, where appropriate 

Performance Indicators for Evaluation of results:
  • Professionally organized training sessions
  • Positive results are obtained in the evaluation of training activities
  • Increase in number of Projects and Activities with partners in the field of business development allowing for an increase business knowledge upon beneficiaries
  • Up to date data on the activities and beneficiaries of the institutes activities documented and stored electronically
  • Communications dealing with Partners and NGOs are proactive and systematic
  • Improved service delivery from public and private policy sectors impacted by the institutes training programmes
  • Enhanced visibility of UNITAR programmes and professionalism in the region
  • Reports on programmatic directions and related issues are regularly made and disseminated

Professionalism:
  • Ability to manage time effectively and remain focused under work pressure
  • Excellent understanding of the organizational structure and UNITAR operations around the world
  • Good knowledge of relevant operational and administrative policies, processes and procedures
  • Ability to accurately prepare a range of unit's outputs, reports, etc.
  • Good research and problem-solving skills, including ability to identify and participate in the resolution of issues/problems
  • Good working knowledge and experience in the use of various research methodologies and sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases 
Planning and organizing - Ability to plan own work, organize and implement UNITAR programmes with partners NGOs CBOs and Private Sector.


Communications
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Organize information and reference materials from various sources (reports, work plans, studies, briefings, meetings/conferences) 

Technology Awareness - Fully proficient in computer skills, use of relevant software and other applications, e.g. word processing, spreadsheets and other statistical applications, Internet, etc.

  • A dependable and dedicated team member with the ability to harmonize his/her contributions with other team members in order to achieve results
  • Ability to initiate and maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment
  • Respect for diversity and gender balance
    • Qualifications:
    • Education: Undergraduate university degree or equivalent in Social Sciences, Geography and Environmental studies or related fields.
    • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in planning/organizing workshops, communications and training/capacity building in corporate environment. Knowledge of UNITAR's institutional policies and guidelines as well as knowledge of the UN system is an advantage.

    • Language: Fluency (oral and written) in English and the local language. 

UNITAR shall place no restrictions on the eligibility of men and women to participate in any capacity and under conditions of equality in its principal and subsidiary organs. (Charter of the United Nations - Chapter 3, article 8). English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Priority will be given to the applicants from the under represented regions at UNITAR. There will be a probation period of 3 months.
